Ketamine Therapy for the Wounded Helper: An integrative approach to treating psychological injury

What You'll Learn

Ketamine-assisted therapy is an innovative and fast-acting treatment approach showing significant promise for individuals struggling with depression, PTSD, and other trauma-related conditions—especially those in high-stress professions like first responders.

Originally developed as an anesthetic, ketamine has been repurposed in controlled, therapeutic settings to help reset patterns of thought and emotion that become “stuck” after trauma. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks to work, ketamine often produces rapid relief—sometimes within hours or days. When combined with psychotherapy, this approach allows individuals to process experiences with greater clarity, emotional safety, and neuroplasticity.

This session explores the growing body of research behind ketamine therapy, including its mechanisms of action in the brain, its safety profile, and why it may be particularly effective for frontline workers coping with chronic stress, burnout, and cumulative trauma.

We’ll also address common myths and stigma surrounding ketamine treatment and discuss how it’s being integrated into broader mental health care models. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how ketamine-assisted psychotherapy works, who it’s best suited for, and how it’s helping to change the landscape of trauma recovery for first responders.

Meet Your Instructor

Alexandra Jabr, PhD & EMT-P

Hi, I’m Alex—founder and lead instructor at Emergency Resilience.

I started my EMS career back in 2003 and have served in many roles over the years: EMT, paramedic, cardiac tech, EMS Coordinator, and Educator. After nearly 15 years in the field and a career-ending back injury, I returned to school to earn a Master’s Degree in Death, Grief, and Bereavement, followed by a Ph.D. in Depth Psychology. That journey deepened my understanding of the emotional and psychological weight first responders carry—and how vital it is to care for our own mental health while supporting others in crisis.

Part of my journey to healing my own traumas has been with the help of ketamine-assisted therapy. It has been a powerful tool, and has showed me firsthand how transformational mental health support can be when it’s approached with openness, innovation, and compassion.

My mission with Emergency Resilience is to bring that same spirit of growth and healing into continuing education. I want to make space for courses that go beyond the basics—trainings that speak to the real human experiences of grief, trauma, and personal development that our work brings to the surface.
